Archaeological Museum of Paleopolis

The Archaelogical Collection of Paleopolis was founded recently. It is housed in a new building (constructed in 1981) that belongs to the community of Paleopolis, sponsored by Basil and Elise Goulandris. The collections of the museum include sculptures, relievos, and inscriptions from the Classical to the Roman period.  

Most important exhibits:

• Exhibit No. 206. Marble sculpture of the mythical winged horse Pegasus with his rider, Bellerophon. It used to be promontory of a temple and it was found in Paleopolis in the late 6th – early 5th century B.C.
• Exhibit No. 208. Marble lion in natural size. Funerary sculpture, found in the cemetery of ancient Andros (Paleopolis). It dates back to 320 BC (approximately).
• Exhibit No. 106. Inscribed marble plate. It includes 178 verses of the hymn in honor of the eastern goddess Isis. The goddess is celebrated as the earthly, heavenly and sea goddess, inventor of shipping etc. It dates back to the 1st century B.C.
• Exhibit No. 209. Marble statue of Artemis of the Hellenic era. It dates back to the 3rd century B.C.
