Monastery of St. Elesa

Information

The memory of Saint Elesa is celebrated on August 1st. The view from the monastery is breathtaking, especially at sunset. It is built on one of the highest points on the south of the island. From the mountain of Agia Elesa you can see the beach of Melidoni and almost the entire island. Elesa was daughter of Elladios from the Peloponnese. She came to Kythera because her father would not accept her Christian faith. However, he found her and killed in 375 AD. The church was built in 1871. Later on newer cells and the three-storey bell tower was built on the northwest side of the monastery.
