One of the distinct monasteries of Greece is located in Piraeus, initially created by a dwelling room, on Daliani Street in Palaia Kokkinia.
This room of the house of the devout Panayiotis Bitounis was transformed into a prayer room decorated with old icons, oil lamps, books, etc. Over the course of time, in the 1980s, Mr. Panagiotis came into contact with the then Metropolitan of Piraeus, Kallinikos, and the oblong room was converted into a small, full of devoutness chapel where Holy Communions (Mass) and religious services (liturgies) were celebrated on Sundays and Feasts.
The first priest who celebrated a liturgy was Konstantinos Kritikos. At some point Mr Panagiotis bought the adjacent plot and incorporated it into his home. He donated all of them to the Holy Metropolis of Piraeus, with the condition of becoming a temple after his decease. He was buried in his native land Zatouna of Arcadia.
The first building of the Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi of Piraeus was erected in 1996 and turned into a temple. In 1999, the main temple was reconstructed, of which the monastic program of the liturgies is fully followed today, after being converted into a monastery for the unmarried clergymen of the Metropolis of Piraeus, with Abbot the priest Theoklitos.
The Catholic (katholikon, major temple) of the monastery which was recently inaugurated by the venerable Metropolitan of Piraeus, Seraphim, is honored in Panagia (Virgin Mary) - Zoodochos Pigi and the young saints, Saint Ioannis (John) Popovits and Saint Porfyrios.
